Greenwood’s acting mayor Jim Gossett is in the hospital recovering from a car crash, leaving another city official to temporarily take charge.

That makes three different mayors for Greenwood in the last three months.

"When we first got the call that he was involved in an accident we heard he was fine,” said Gossett’s son Tim Gossett.“The situation changed once we got down there. He was being loaded into an ambulance."

The crash occurred on Arkansas Highway 10 west of Booneville on Monday morning, according to Gossett’s family.

Gossett's family said he drifted off the road, and his car went into a ditch. Gossett has been acting mayor since the previous mayor resigned because of a medical condition in January.

Gossett was taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith.

"There's been a lot of curve balls thrown and a lot of changes. He developed some complications," said his son Tim Gossett.

Greenwood City Clerk Sharla Derry said for the time being, she will take over the role as Greenwood mayor.

"We've never been in this sort of situation," said Derry.

Derry is performing the mayor's duties. She explained who else might be in line if something happens to her.

"It is in the state law that the mayor can appoint a citizen or a resident of the city," she said.

Derry said voters will decide the next mayor in a May election.

Gossett's family said they are relying on prayer and are confident they will see their loved one out of the hospital soon.

"He's a trooper,” said Tim Gossett. “I know he's going to get better."

A medical incident may have contributed to the accident, according to the Logan County Sheriff's Office.
