Governor Mike Beebe is going to issue a proclamation designating April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Arkansas, according to a news release Wednesday.

Dorinda Edmisten, executive director of the Ozark Rape Crisis Center, will receive the National Sexual Violent Resource Center’s 2014 Visionary Voice Award for Arkansas, according to the news release.

This will take place at the Governor’s Conference Room in the Arkansas State Capitol building on Thursday (April 10) at 9 a.m.

“April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a nationwide effort to call attention to the fact that sexual violence is widespread and impacts every community in our country.  Sexual violence is a devastating and indefensible crime, affecting women, children and men of all racial, cultural and economic backgrounds. In Arkansas, one in five women will experience a sexual assault at some point in her lifetime,” the news release states.

Governor Beebe will be issuing the proclamation and presenting the Visionary Voice Award.
