A big group of superheroes were seen running in Fort Smith on Saturday (April 5) in support of Autism Awareness Month.

Hundreds of people attended Developmental Wings', a local organization that helps children with autism and other disabilities, first Super Heroes for Autism 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run. Some ran for family members, others ran to show their support for autism.

"I have a cousin who is autistic, and a couple of friends whop have autistic children," said Carrie Scrivner.

The event brought in close to 400 runners, a turnout that was not expected.

"We had a great response," said Michelle Long, Executive Director of Developmental Wings. "We expected one hundred people in registration. The pre-registration was 340."

More than $7,000 was raised on Saturday, all of which will go back to the organization.

"We serve kids with autism and developmental disabilities with many programs and activities," Long said.

Long said Developmental Wings plans to make the run an annual event.
