A Siloam Springs firefighter was killed in a collision with an 18-wheel tractor-trailer on Sunday (April 6).

Tanner Rundle, a rookie firefighter in Siloam Springs, died after his 2012 Mazda 6 struck the trailer portion of a 2013 Kenworth T660 about 1:55 p.m., according to a news release from the Arkansas State Police.

The 18-wheeler had been traveling east on U.S. 412 before turning left onto Fairmount Road in front of Rundle’s car, which had been traveling west on U.S. 412, the release states.

Rundle’s car hit the trailer portion of the 18-wheeler, traveling underneath the trailer and coming to rest after striking some trees along the highway, troopers said. Rundle was alone in the car.

Rundle was hired as a firefighter on Feb. 18 after moving to Siloam Springs from Austin, Texas.

“Tanner had already established a reputation of being a very conscientious and hardworking employee who was well respected by his colleagues,” said Greg Neely, Siloam Springs fire chief.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Ray C. Townley, was uninjured. It was unclear Sunday whether he would be cited, pending an investigation.
