CBS News – A car cashed into a day care center Wednesday afternoon, injuring a dozen people, including 11 children, officials said.

CBS affiliate WKMG in Orlando said the crash occurred around 3:05 p.m. at the KinderCare Learning Center on Goldenrod Road in Winter Park.

Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs called the crash “an absolute tragedy and disaster.”

Orange County Fire Rescue said the crash occurred when an SUV or pickup truck ran another vehicle off the road, causing that other car to crash into the day care center.

The driver who caused the crash by running the other vehicle off the road did not stop. Officials were looking for a silver, gray or light blue Dodge Durango or pickup.

The Florida Highway Patrol said victims were taken to five area hospitals and some of the injuries are were serious. Four children were taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital, officials said, but their conditions were unknown.

The day care was evacuated after the crash and part of Goldenrod Road was shut down, WKMG said.

Some parents arrived at the day care after learning of the crash and were trying to learn the whereabouts of their children. Orange County Fire Rescue said the uninjured children were put in a safe place and day care officials were taking roll call to reunite the children with their parents.

Florida Highway Patrol said at a news conference that the vehicle that caused the accident will be will be missing its front bumper. Officials also said there were wheelchairs in the back of vehicle.
