Arkansas Tech University has gotten its first ever female president.

The Arkansas Tech University Board of Trustees elected Dr. Robin E. Bowen on Tuesday (April 22) during a special board meeting, according to a news release from Sam Strasner, Director of University Relations.

Bowen is the executive vice president and provost at Fitchburg State University in Mass., and she will assume the office of president at ATU on July 1, 2014.

She’ll succeed Dr. Robert C. Brown, who will retire after 21 years of holding that position, according to Strasner.

“I am both humbled and honored to be standing here before you being named the 12th president of Arkansas Tech University,” said Bowen before a crowd of several hundred students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members on Tuesday afternoon.

She continued, “I want to thank the members of the search committee and the members of the board. You did a beautiful job with the search.”

“I also want to thank President Brown and his wife, Jill,” continued Bowen. “You have been very gracious and I really appreciate everything that you are doing to help make this transition a smooth one. They have truly transformed this campus during their 21-year tenure, and I promise I will do everything within my power to continue that tradition of excellence.”
