A Fayetteville technology company associated with the University of Arkansas was awarded a $3.5 million contract to develop power modules for Air Force fighter jets, the university announced Wednesday.
Arkansas Power Electronics International is set to create the high-temperature silicon carbide power modules for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, an aircraft in development that is part of the Air Force’s new “more electric” and “all electric” aircraft design philosophy, according to a statement released by the UA.
The lighter, low-maintenance electric motors will replace the “costly and bulky mechanical hydraulic aircraft flight control systems,” the statement reads.
The company is a frequent collaborator with the university, and most of its 49 employees are UA graduates.
Arkansas Power Electronics International is affiliated with the UA through its Arkansas Research and Technology Park.
