Wise Leads Dominant Defensive Effort

Sophomore defensive end records five sacks as Hogs’ D Highlights Red-White Game

Deatrich Wise may not have been a household name entering Saturday's Red-White game but Arkansas fans quickly learned of the defensive tackle.

Wise recorded five first half sacks and forced a fumble as his first team defense stole the show at Razorback Stadium.

The defensive front was without standout end Trey Flowers but he saw from the sideline what potential the Razorbacks front has.

“We have made tremendous strides from last spring," Flowers said. "It’s another year under our belt and more experience for us. We want to continue improving during the summer."

Flowers sat out of all scrimmage situations this spring to avoid injury.

Darius Philon also made life hard on both backup quarterbacks Austin Allen and Rafe Peavey as he recorded two more sacks and returned a fumble for a score. Philon's return was the first play after safety Rohan Gaines returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdown.

Martrell Spaight and Brooks Ellis are expected to lead the defense this fall and that showed as each recorded nine tackles, tied for the game high. Safety Alan Turner added seven stops and said he could see the progress the Arkansas defense is making.

“I just feel like we’re more crisp and taking strides to get better," Turner said.
