A shooting in Fort Smith Monday evening (April 28) sent a man to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Sgt. Grubbs with the Fort Smith Police Department.

The shooting took place at the Timberline Apartments at 5900 Kinkead Ave, and the victim was identified as 28-year-old Jason McAlester, according to Grubbs.

McAlester said he was sitting outside on the steps of his apartment when someone shot him in the groin, according to Grubbs. The bullet exited near his buttocks and lodged in the wall behind him, police said.

The investigating officer’s report says it was believed to be a 40 caliber bullet that hit the man in the left side of the groin. No arrests have been made, according to Grubbs.

Grubbs said the victim initially named a suspect but after further questioning recanted knowing the suspect or the identity of the shooter.

The call of the shooting came in around 10:56 p.m.
