Arkansas Sophomore Defensive End Flashes Potential

Deatrich Wise Jr. was a defensive force during the red and white game, something Bielema has seen coming

A handful of players stood out this past Saturday during the red and white game.  Sophomore defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. was one of them.

Wise had five sacks on Saturday. No one else had more than two. Wise also forced a fumble that was picked up by Darius Philon for a 19 yard touchdown return.

Arkansas coach Bret Bielema understands the potential Wise has.

"The part about Deatrich is he is a kid with unbelievable talent, a lot of God-given ability," said head coach Bret Bielema.  "He has begun to scratch the surface of how good he can be.

He flashed last year and continued through the course of the spring."

But Bielema just wants one thing from Wise.

"He has definitely shown great great signs, he uses his hands, he has great separation," said Bielema.  "It just has to be consistent on first, second, and third down."

Wise will be the first to admit how far he has come from last spring.  Part of that growth has been his football IQ.

"What's the point of having the skills if you don't know what you're doing," said defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr.  "I want to learn more about the X's and O's about the defense so it can evolve and I can get better at my game."

Wise credits a lot of his growth to Trey Flowers who has become a mentor for the sophomore.

"I just try to help him out as much as I can," said senior defensive end Trey Flowers. "So if he comes at me and asks me a question, I try to break it down for him and try to explain it as thoroughly as possible."
