The city of Springdale will close the intersection of 48th street and Don Tyson Parkway from Thursday (May 1) at 9 a.m. to Sunday (May 4) at 10 p.m.

During the closing time, there will some improvement projects done.

"That intersection gets widened out along with Don Tyson Parkway Interchange," said Alan Pugh, director of engineering for the city of Springdale. "It does receive a traffic signal."

Northbound traffic will be able to make a right turn on Don Tyson Parkway. Southbound traffic will to take either 56th street, 40th street or Carley Street.

"Ultimately it will be much easier for the driving public to negotiate and again we thought as much as we can reduce that construction time frame, it will hopefully reduce the burden on the public as well," Pugh said.

The closure is part of the Don Tyson Interchange project. It's a new exit that's being built between Exit 69 in Johnson and Exit 72 in Springdale off of Interstate 49. Once the new exit is complete, drivers getting off the interstate will go through the intersection of 48th street and Don Tyson Parkway.

Pugh said that Don Tyson Interchange project is moving along as scheduled.

"We did have some weather this winter as everybody knows," Pugh said. "Our contractor has done a very good job at accelerating some portions of the construction to get us back on track."

"We are still tracking August deadline. If we do continue to get good weather this Spring and hopefully this summer that deadline could move up into July," Pugh said.

The Don Tyson Interchange will cost $23 million.
