The New York Times – The Supreme Court ruled Monday (May 5) that a town in upstate New York could begin its public meetings using a prayer from a “chaplain of the month.”
Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote for the majority in the decision. The finally tally for the decision was five to four. Kennedy wrote, “ceremonial prayer is but a recognition that, since this nation was founded and until the present day, many Americans deem that their own existence must be understood by precepts far beyond that authority of government to alter or define.”
Officials of the town did say that members of all faiths, as well as atheists, were free to give the opening prayer.
