Michael Sam made headlines during the 2013 season as he was selected as the SEC defensive player of the year.

The Missouri defensive end then made headlines in the offseason as he came out publicly as gay.

Sunday, he became the first ever openly gay player selected in the NFL Draft as the Rams picked him in the seventh round, No. 249 overall.

“I don’t have any concern whatsoever,” Rams coach Jeff Fisher said. “We drafted a good football player. I’m excited to get him on the practice field. Yea, there’s going to be a little extra attention for a couple of days. We have a very mature team and certainly not going to let any kind of distraction affect this football team.”

Sam finished the 2013 season with 48 tackles, 19 tackles for loss and a team high 11.5 sacks.
