The Battle of Highway 62 will likely never be the same after decades of rivalry competition. Prairie Grove and Farmington battled tooth and nail for the 4A regional baseball finals on Monday, but the Tigers had the last laugh edging out the Cardinals 11-9.
"We beat them twice this year and it's hard to beat a team three times. So coming in, right there, we had to play well," said Prairie Grove head coach Mitch Cameron.
With Farmington moving to the 5A next year, Monday's game may have been the last meeting ever in any sport between the two schools in 4A competition.
"I'm a little sad that the rivalry has to come to an end this year," said Prairie Grove senior second baseman Brandon May. "They are a great team and we are a great team and when great teams get together they play hard."
"It stinks. I mean, it's been awesome. I've been in it for four years and I'll never forget the games against Farmington," said senior pitcher Ty Tice. "It's been great. It's been a great ride."
"We are going to keep playing non conference, but every year to be able to fight against those guys, it's a lot of fun and we're going to miss that," said Cameron. "The intensity, in non conference, I'm sure it will be just the same but it won't mean anything."
