A long-time Fort Smith doctor passed away Friday (May 16), according to his obituary.

Dr. R. C. Goodman Sr. was born Sept. 23, 1920 in Ogden, Ark. He passed away at his home with family by his side, according to the obituary.

Goodman grew up in Ogden before joining the Arkansas National Guard in 1939. He started college in Magnolia not long after, the obituary states.

He finished his military career with the rank of Major and was awarded numerous medals. He started medical school in Little Rock in 1947.

Goodman chose to become an anesthesiologist and came with his family to Fort Smith where he was the first and only anesthesiologist in the region for several years, according to the obituary.

He established the R.C. Goodman Institute for the Treatment of Chronic Pain at Sparks Regional Medical Center. He served at multiple hospitals in the area through his life, the obituary states.

The memorial service will be Tuesday (May 20) at 11 a.m. The location of the service will be in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church in Fort Smith, according to the obituary.
