This weekend is a homecoming for former Rogers track and cross country star Maggie Montoya.

Montoya won 17 state championships during her four years with the Mounties, including multiple state records and the award for 2012 Arkansas Gatorade Runner of the Year. She is now a freshman at Baylor, competing in the NCAA West Prelims at the University of Arkansas this weekend.

In just her first year of competition, Montoya is already a huge asset for the Bears, finishing as high as second on the team in a few races. Usually athletes talk about how much different high school sports are from college, but for Montoya, she sees a lot of similarities, especially with her coach.

“High school wasn't too serious,” said Montoya. “Baylor has a small enough team, so the coaches can really focus each athlete individually to see how they want to be covered and check up on them. It's really nice.”

Montoya says her goal the next three years at Baylor is to qualify for the track national championships in Eugene, Ore.
