A man drowned in a Siloam Springs river Friday night while fishing with his family, according to responding authorities.

Timothy Clements, 18, was fishing with his father and two brothers in the Illinois River, when his pole fell into the water. He went into the river after it, but never emerged, according to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office.

The man’s father and two brothers jumped in after him, but could not recover him, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency crews responded at 6:56 p.m. to the site of the drowning, near Old Highway 68 and U.S. 412. Dive teams from the Benton County Sheriff’s Office were called in to search for and recover the body, according to the Siloam Springs Police Department.

Crews discovered Clements’ body Saturday after temporarily suspending the search the previous night because of darkness, according to a call log released by the Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators do not suspect drugs or alcohol had anything to do with the drowning, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

An obituary filed through the Wasson Funeral Home in Siloam Springs states Clements was a graduate of Decatur High School and was inducted as an ensign in the U.S. Navy.

Clements’ funeral is set for Saturday, the obituary states.

Several people left tribute messages on Clements’ profile on the funeral home website.

NorthWest Arkansas Community College President Evelyn E. Jorgenson left a message stating, “Though I did not know Timothy personally, I’ve already heard many kind words from employees here at the College who knew or had met Timothy. He is described as having a kind and generous spirit.”

Jorgenson continues, “How very difficult it must be to lose a fine young man, a son, so early in his life. I too have a son and can only imagine how difficult your loss must be. The thoughts and prayers of all of us at NorthWest Arkansas Community College are with you at this difficult time. Please know that we care.”

Decatur High School Counselor Nancy Cotter also left a messages, which states, “As the years pass, when I remember Timmy, I will be remembering a young man who possessed the characteristics of unselfish behavior toward others as exemplified by his reaching out to always offer a helping hand to those in need.”

Cotter’s message concludes, “An individual who showed maturity far beyond his years. He had already developed a plan for his life. He possessed a desire for adventure as shown by his enlistment in the navy. I will remember his smile and gentle ways. May God bless you and keep you as you deal with the loss of Timmy. He was an outstanding young man.”
