A local hospital is helping raise money for patients needing treatment at other facilities across the nation.

The emergency room staff at Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith holds a softball tournament with first responders every year. After they learned Kelly Hill, Director of Emergency Services, was diagnosed with cancer, staff members decided to donate all proceeds this year to Angel Flight South Central.

"Angel Flight has helped millions of people and for an ER to help this organization, it just means a lot" LPN Nicole Johnson said.

Angel Flight played a vital role in helping Hill win her battle with cancer by flying her to Houston for treatment.

"The things she was going through were very tough and she continued to work," Registered Nurse Trevis Walker said. "She was here for us and for her community. "

Angel Flight is a free, volunteer based service for cancer patients who need to be flown to another facility for medical treatment.

"It's needed," said Walker. "There's so many people that can't afford this and even if they could one or two trips, they can't afford them all. "

For just one dollar, you can watch games against Sparks ER staff, Fort Smith Police, Fort Smith Firefighters, and others. Money collected from teams’ entry fees, admission, and concessions will all be donated to Angel Flight.

Kids can even hop in a helicopter, ambulance, or fire truck at the event.

"We have concession,” said LPN Nicole Johnson. “We have t-shirts. Sparks has donated quite a bit of stuff for this event, so we just hope people come out and have a great time and knock it out of the park."

The ‘Knock it out of the Park’ tournament will be held Saturday (June 7) starting at 10 a.m. at the Fort Smith Church League Baseball Fields on Old Greenwood Road in Fort Smith.
