Washington County investigators are searching for a suspect they say pretended to be a deputy in order to con a local victim out of money.

A Fayetteville attorney called the Washington County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, saying his client received a call from someone claiming to be Chief Deputy Jay Cantrell. The impostor asked the client to go to a local Dollar General and get a money order in the amount of $1,100 to pay off a fine, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect also had the victim talk to someone pretending to be Washington County Sheriff’s Office Enforcement Major Rick Hoyt, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities received a call later Thursday reporting a similar incident in the Goshen area.

Anyone with information on the fraudulent calls is asked to report them to local law enforcement. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office does not collect money over the phone and does not meet those receiving fines in parking lots, according to a statement released by the Sheriff’s Office.
