The Supreme Court placed limits on a federal program already in place to deal with power plant and factory emissions of gasses that are blamed for global warming, according to a report from CBS News.

The Justices ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency lacks authority in a multiple cases to force companies to evaluate ways to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, CBS reported.

This rule would apply when a company needs a permit to expand facilities or build new ones that would increase the total amount of pollution. Carbon dioxide is the chief gas linked to global warming, according to CBS News.

The ruling doesn’t affect EPA proposals for first-time national standards for new and already-existing power plants, CBS reported.
