A Fort Smith sex offender was arrested Tuesday (June 24) on suspicion of kidnapping and aggravated robbery, according to a news release from the Fort Smith Police Department.

Ardwin Frank Sylvester, 37, was arrested after police say he forced a 54-year-old Van Buren woman into her car at gunpoint and kidnapped her. The incident occurred in the Staples parking lot located in the 5700 block of Rogers Avenue, the release states.

The victim told police that at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, the suspect drove her toward Mena, and while refueling at an EZ-Mart in Ashdown, he sexually assaulted her. Afterwards, while still at the gas station, the victim fled from the vehicle telling anyone that could hear her to call 911 because she had been kidnapped, according to the release.

Sylvester sped off in her car and led Arkansas State Police on a chase. During the chase, Sylvester threw a semi-automatic handgun from the window. Following the pursuit, he was taken into custody, the release states.

Sylvester was arrested and faces charges of kidnapping, aggravated robbery, rape and felon in possession of a firearm. His bond has been set at $250,000, according to the release.

If 911 dispatch would have taken the call from Staples management seriously there is a possibility this could have been avoided!
Police never even showedup to the store even though while they were in the parking lot dispatch was given a detailed description of the vehicle and license plate number.
What happened to protect and serve? Why did police not respond to the 911 call?

I don’t see anything about STaples contacting the police but if they did there better be some disciplinary action taken against someone. We had an issue in our neighborhood last night and was told they were to busy to send an officer. I said so these llittle punks are just allowed to destroy people’s property and threaten them. I was told all they could do was a drive by. I guess we will see what they say when one of these punks gets his head blown off for messing around people’s houses at 12:30 a.m. Fort Smith police are worthless. All of the good ones have retired.

The store manager called 911 as the car was leaving the lot. I kept waiting for the cops to show up, but it was about 4 hours later before he even recieved a call back. I think she had escaped by then.

Why is story so hush hush now? FSPD screwed up again trying to figure out how to explain why dispatcher didn’t send anyone to Staples.

I guarantee you around the same time he was convicted the first time there was a man that was convicted of a first offense drug charge that has been in prison this entire time. While this nasty worthless man got to get out and get his fix at the expense of an innocent women. The problem is the judicial system… Not so much the local pd. Not there off the hook for anything..
