A suspected rapist attempted to commit suicide in the Sebastian County Detention Center, according to a news release from the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office.

Marcus Tucker was arrested on June 21 by the Fort Smith Police Department on suspicion of rape. He had just returned from a 9 a.m. court appearance on Wednesday (June 25). Deputies put him back in his cell, and they returned to his cell at 10 a.m. to serve a protection order for violating his previous parole. When they found him, he was “in the act of harming himself,” the release states.

Deputies and Sebastian County Detention Center medical personnel immediately began life-saving procedures on Tucker. The Fort Smith Fire Department and EMS also responded to the scene, according to the release.

Tucker was transported to Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith where he is still receiving treatment and care, the release states.

Tucker was sentenced in a 2012 sexual assault case, but he was paroled in 2014. He is a registered sex offender, according to the release.

Arkansas State Police are investigating the situation, and the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office is also conducting an internal investigation in reference to policy matter, according to the release.
