That was fast.
It took Petra Kvitova just under an hour to wrap up her second Wimbledon title, defeating Eugenie Bouchard Saturday at the All England Club, 6-3, 6-0.
It was a dominant performance by Kvitova, who conceded just 37 points to Bouchard in total. The last time a Wimbledon winner only lost three games was 1992, when Steffi Graf beat Monica Seles 6-2, 6-1. And it wasn’t like Bouchard was bad, necessarily; Kvitova was just absolutely unstoppable.
“Definitely I had a great tactic from my coach. He always know how I should play,” a somewhat emotional Kvitova said. “My team helped me over the years to come back here and win the trophy again. I can’t say it’s more special [than winning in 2011] but after three years to be here with the trophy again — it’s amazing.
“It’s an amazing time for me.”
Kvitova piled up 28 winners, while Bouchard only committed four unforced errors. That lends credence to just how well Kvitova played — it wasn’t as if Bouchard was floundering out there. Kvitova was just too good.
At the start, it appeared the match would be something of a nip-and-tuck affair. Bouchard won the first game, and it was 3-2 midway through the first set. Then Kvitova took off, winning nine of the next 10 games en route to a decisive victory.
Bouchard recognized Kvitova’s dominance to the Wimbledon crowd after the match.
“I’d like to congratulate Petra. She played fantastic these two weeks,” she said. “It was really tough for today, but I’m proud of how I played this tournament. I feel like it’s a step in the right direction. I don’t know if I deserve all your love today, but I appreciate it.”
Saturday marked the first time Bouchard, who is just 20, reached a Grand Slam final. It was the second Wimbledon title for Kvitova, who beat Maria Sharapova in 2011.
