Scott County Sheriff Amie Carpenter’s daughter was involved in a car accident Friday (July 11).

Carpenter told 5NEWS it happened around 2 p.m. U.S. 71 just near Acorn.

Christian Carpenter, 18, of Waldron told her mother she thinks something malfunctioned with the power steering, causing her to lose control of the car. She crashed her Saturn Ion into a tree, and at that time, her 17-year-old friend was ejected from the car. The sheriff said she is thankful the girls are OK as things could have been much worse.

“My daughter and her friend have been treated and released [with] no major injuries,” she said. “They are lucky girls. God and her daddy were both watching over them.”

Sheriff Carpenter’s husband, Cody, is the former Scott County sheriff. He was killed during a flood rescue operation in May 2013.

The impact of Friday’s crash knocked off a wheel off Carpenter’s car and flew into the roadway, hitting a motorcycle and two other vehicles. Amie Carpenter said it did not cause an accident, however.

Polk County deputies and the Arkansas State Police worked the case. According to the driver’s mother, her passenger was airlifted to the Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock and may have suffered a mild concussion. Sheriff Carpenter said she is thankful for all the first responders.
