ROGERS (KFSM) - It's gone by many names. Baggo. Hillbilly Horseshoes. But the game is Cornhole.
And there's even a Northwest Arkansas Cornhole championship.
The Kendrick Fincher Hydration for Life foundation put on the event 'Catfish, Corndogs & Cornhole' to help raise awareness and support for the non-profit organization that was founded by Rhonda Fincher. Rhonda lost her son, Kendrick, in 1995 after he suffered from heat related illnesses after not being properly hydrated during the first day of football practice.
"Our mission is to promote proper hydration and prevent heat illness," Fincher said. "We work with children, coaches, athletes parents and we educate them on why it's important to stay hydrated all the time whether they're in school, work or playing in sports."
So Rhonda teamed up with WhyteSpyder and Collective Bias to put on the event. Nearly 70 teams, including the 5NEWS sports department, entered to try to claim the title of NWA Cornhole champion.
Of all the recreational events they could have picked, why cornhole?
"Why cornhole?," event co-chair and CEO of Whyte Spyder Eric Howerton asked. "Because it's one of the best games ever. Anybody can come out and play. You don’t have to be a certain age, a certain skill level. It’s not like golf or tennis or anything like that. You come out, throw the bag and try to get it in the hole."
The event helped raise nearly $10,000 for the foundation and promoted the cause that Fincher has dedicated her life toward.
"The turnout is great and I love that there is now another 120 people that have been exposed to our mission," Fincher said. "They can be out there and be our ambassadors too and help spread the information on heat illness prevention."
