FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM)- The Fayetteville City Council will vote to move forward with the first phase of a parking deck near Dickson Street. The location is behind the Walton Arts Center at the corner of Spring Street and School Avenue.
The first phase includes demolition of the Walton Arts Center offices and excavation since part of the deck will be underground, according to Jeremy Pate, development services director.
The WAC's offices will share space with the parking deck that will be three floors.
The city had decided on the location in late 2012 and was scheduled to start construction in mid-2013. However, they delayed construction for about a year to let the WAC work on its expansion master plan, Pate said.
The future parking deck will be a block away from Dickson Street where parking is an issue. It will add 246 parking spots.
The city hasn't released how much it will cost for parking.
"I think that they need some more parking down here," said Kelly McNeal, who was visiting Dickson Street. "I don't mind paying for parking either actually. If it's a paid parking deck I think that's great just so there's more places to park."
If city council gives construction crews the green light, the first phase will start in mid-August.
Pate said they don't know how much the total cost will be until the bids come in for the second phase. He said the first phase will cost $450,000 about $180,000 under budget.
