FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) – Construction began Monday on Fayetteville’s Walton Arts Center, which was closed in June because of structural problems with the building’s roof.

Officials for the center said it will take workers about four weeks to secure trusses on the roof by adding steel to reinforce the trusses. When the roof repair is finished, the Walton Arts Center Box Office, lobby and Starr Theater will re-open, according to a statement released Monday by the center.

The venue’s opening show is set for Sept. 28, when Dr. John and the Nite Trippers, along with the Cate Brothers, are scheduled to perform.

The Walton Arts Center closed suddenly June 23, after engineers working on the upcoming expansion project found a “structural issue” with the trusses that support Baum Walker Hall, according to a statement released by the organization in June. The steel trusses in Baum Walker Hall were initially set to be strengthened in the summer of 2015.

Shortly after the discovery, Baum Walker Hall was declared unsafe for public occupancy, and the Walton Arts Center temporarily moved its box office to Nadine Baum Studios.
