SEBASTIAN COUNTY (KFSM) - A Lavaca farmer is safe Monday (Aug. 4), after jumping off his burning tractor after it burst into flames around 8 a.m.

Authorities said the fire happened in a field off of Highway 252, just north of Highway 96, near Lavaca.

Dennis Chronister, from Lavaca, told 5NEWS he was brush hogging, when he noticed flames coming from the back of his tractor. He said he then watched his entire tractor go up in flames.

"I just jumped right on out," Chronister said.

Chronister was not hurt in the fire.

Several area fire departments worked to get the flames under control.

Chronister said he thinks the gas line may have ruptured, and caused the fire to spark; however, crews said the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Chronister said the tractor was destroyed. He said he does have insurance on the tractor, and plans to file a claim.
