WASHINGTON COUNTY (KFSM) – Colleagues of a deputy shot in action say the injured corporal will be okay.

Corporal Taylor Reed was shot after responding to reports of a shooting.

“He’s a great coworker, a great leader, but even a better friend,” said Corporal TJ Rennie.

Authorities say Reed was hit with a round from a 38-caliber revolver in the arm.

The round tore through his arm and entered his chest at an opening in his bullet-proof vest.

“You never know what’s going to happen,” Corporal Zach Stachey said.

Deputies tell 5NEWS they heard the words “officer down” over the radio.

“It was scary. Anybody who wouldn’t be scared in that situation would be lying to you,” Stachey said.

Reed was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Awaiting surgery, deputies tell 5NEWS that Reed is in good spirits.

“I saw him last night, and he said ‘I ain’t dying boys’,” Rennie said.

Officials say the 29-year-old corporal began working with Washington County as a dispatcher in 2007, before moving up to patrol in 2009.

“He’s a brother to me,” Stachey said.

Recently joining the K9 team, Reed often respond to calls with other deputies.

“It’s an honor to work with him, that’s for sure,” Rennie said.

Officials say Reed is awake in Washington County Regional Hospital, where he is alert and in good spirits.

Reed has received several visitors, including his wife and baby.

“Him and his family are just extremely thankful,” Stachey said. “It’s a blessing from The Lord that he is okay.”
