FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) – The groundbreaking for the Spring Street municipal parking deck has been delayed. It was scheduled for Monday (Aug. 25) at 1 p.m.

They city wants to re-evaluate and rebid the project based on “new information relating to concrete prices,” according to a news release.

The future groundbreaking date hasn’t been determined.

The parking deck will be located near Dickson Street in Fayetteville behind the Walton Arts Center. It will add 245 parking spots.

The groundbreaking means the start of a project that’s been years in the making, said Chris Brown, city engineer.

“It’s an important step to get things moving,” Brown said. “It gets everybody excited about the project.”

“It really shows that yes we are moving forward with this project,” he said. “It gets everyone mobilized.”

The first phase of the project will tear down the Walton Arts Center offices, which will be built inside the deck. They also have to dig up to 10 feet underground.

“The building will take only a week or maybe a couple of weeks to come down and then they’ve got several feet of excavation that they have to do, up to 10 feet in some areas,” Brown said. “It will be a very large hole that they’ll be digging out, lots of trucks in and out over a period of a couple of months.”

Spring Street and School Avenue, which surround the construction zone, will remain closed until the project is finished.

The parking deck is expected to cost about $8.7 million. It will take about a year to a year and a half to complete the project.
