SPRINGDALE (KFSM) – The Springdale Fire Department will hold an 8-week training course for its Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program starting Tuesday (Sept. 2) night.

An instructor from Benton County will train residents how to respond to emergencies and natural disasters. Those who attend the classes will also learn how to work alongside firefighters if something major were to happen.

“On a day-to-day type incident we deal with, we have more than enough equipment and people to handle it,” said Captain Zedok Crabbe with the Springdale Fire Department, “This is in the instance of a tornado or an ice storm, something like that, where we are just stretched too thin to get everywhere we might be needed.”

This is the first time the Department is offering this type of training.

“Basically they form a team, and it will be a response team, they will have a point of contact or a team leader, and an alternate who will be able to contact the city, ” said Crabbe, “Then through the city, they’ll contact the police department, fire department, and public works to know what we need and basically be our eyes out in the communities.”

The classes will be held every Tuesday night from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Springdale Fire Station 1 located at 417 Holcomb Street.
