FORT SMITH (KFSM)- A new ordinance kicked off (Sept. 4) telling residents where they can and can't post temporary signs in Fort Smith.
The purpose is to do away with any signs that could distract drivers.

"We just about print anything," Pogue said.
The city says signs cannot be placed in the right of way on roads.
Examples include the area between the sidewalk and street, any drainage ditch area, areas within 10 feet of the street, utility poles, traffic signs or traffic control devices.
"Actually, I think it's a great idea," Pogue said.
Director of Development Services Wally Bailey said there are exceptions.
"If somebody is having a garage sale on the weekend or having an open house from 12 p.m. on Friday to 12 p.m. on Monday, they can put some signs in the right of way."
Bailey said in the case of violators, they will first try to notify whoever put the signs out, and if they can't get in touch with that person, they will take the appropriate action.
"We collect the signs, and we will put them into a storage place for 30 days and give them an opportunity to come and collect the signs," Bailey said.
The city said for now those who violate the sign ordinance will not be fined.
