FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) - Enterovirus D68 is sweeping the Midwest, but has not made its way into Arkansas yet.

However, that isn`t stopping the Fayetteville Public Schools district from putting out an early notice of the virus to parents.

The district released an information guide to parents on their website about the virus.

The virus has only been impacting children at this time.

The virus shows many similar symptoms to the common cold. But, those symptoms worsen over time, often impacting a child`s breathing.

“I really started suspecting it with my own child because she had just started having some respiratory issues,” said Laleh Amirmoez, a Fayetteville parent.

Doctors tell 5NEWS that the virus isn`t anything to panic about at this time.

“I think the school districts, with the flu epidemic the past few years, have been pretty good about teaching them about covering their faces,” said Rolf Wilson, a Fayetteville parent.

Some parents that 5NEWS spoke to said they were not overly concerned about the virus.

“It doesn`t worry me anymore than any other virus that has been around,” Amirmoez said.

The virus currently has no vaccine. But, no deaths have come from it at this time.

Amirmoez is doing exactly what doctors suggest.

“You just have to be vigilant about it, and think about it. Teach them to wash hands, and do things that will hopefully avoid it,” Amirmoez said. “I remind my kids to wash hands when they come home. Just germ-X is not enough. Use soap, use water, it is just the basic typical safety things.”

Some parents, like Wilson, say they believe the school districts are doing everything they can to make sure their student`s health is a top priority.

“I`m sure the schools are doing their best to prevent transmission if possible,” Wilson said.
