GREENWOOD (KFSM) -- Greenwood voters are preparing to hit the polls to decide whether or not a new multimillion dollar facility will come to town through a property tax increase.

Greenwood school officials are hoping voters will approve a $1.9 million increase. It will bring a new freshman center to the campus.

Greenwood Superintendent John Ciesla said they’re at capacity.

"It's a use it or lose it opportunity," Ciesla said. "For somebody with a $100,000 home the equivalent would be $3.17 per month of tax increase."

Ciesla said the facility would be added on to the current high school and make room for 400 new students.

The school has already secured $2.3 million from the state but needs the voters to help with the rest. The building's price tag comes in at close to $12 million, according to Ciesla.

Similar plans have failed before.

"We did propose several years ago an elementary school at the Chaffee Crossing site, and our voters did reject that," Ciesla said.

5NEWS asked what would happen if voters reject the plan.

“We'd lose the $2.3 million, and right now, there's really not a plan," Ciesla said.

If the funding is approved the school hopes to break ground by January, 2015 and open the building in 2016.
