FORT SMITH (KFSM)-Nearly 2,000 kids got to skip school Wednesday (Sept. 24) for a different kind of learning experience. That’s because it was 4-H and FFA Day at the Arkansas-Oklahoma State Fair.

Organizers say this event focuses on equipment and production skills rather than actually handling animals. Kids got to compete in various contests including horticulture, consumer judging, kitchen and food ID, livestock skills, rabbit and poultry skills.

“I love to raise silky`s and they are my favorite kind of chicken,” Ivalynn Branum, 4-H member said. “They`re very fluffy chickens.”

“It teaches you so many leadership skills, and you have lasting friendships that will last for the rest of your life,” Daniel Turpin, Cedarville FFA President said.

“You learn so many leadership skills, and you have lasting friendships that will last for the rest of your life,” Kaycee Maxwell, Cedarville FFA member said.

The event’s chairman Jesse Bocksnick said these clubs teach responsibility, teamwork and good study habits.
