At Confectionately Yours, in Fort Smith, you’ll find row after row of sweet treats for just about any occasion. But, for the past few weeks, two of the employees have worked round the clock on projects that will never be sold in the store.

Alexandria Strassmann and Rebecca Hines are competing in the Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show, an annual competition that’s been featured on the Food Network.

“I’ve been planning it for a couple months, ever since they posted information on their website,” Strassmann said.

She’s making a royal iced board.

“I just started googling and finding pictures that inspired me, and I kind of made up my own, pulling pictures from things I liked,” Strassmann said. “It’s a girl that’s going to sit on an ornate box with a flower behind her and an arch above her head.”

Meanwhile, Hines is entering the tiered cake division. She’s worked roughly 100 unpaid hours to create a tribute to the late Robin Williams.

“I wanted to do something with characters, so I decided to do all the Robin Williams characters from my favorite movies,” Hines said. “I’ve got Mrs. Doubtfire, Bicentennial Man, the Flubber scientist, the genie from Aladdin, Peter Pan from Hook, and Robin Williams as himself holding an Oscar on the top tier.”

Both competitors have faced a variety of challenges.

“I have broken a few things unfortunately, but I think I can either redo them or fix them,” Strassmann said.

“I’ve had a couple where I worked five hours on a character, and his leg snaps off, and I have to redo the whole thing. So it's a little discouraging,” Hines said.

But, that’s to be expected, when entering a competition of this caliber.

“I do things here all the time that are other peoples passions. It’s great to bring something that I'm passionate about into my own thing,” Hines said.

The judging takes place Saturday, and the winners are announced Sunday. The main category is a wedding cake competition, which was won last year by a woman who owns a cake shop in Springdale.
