BENTON COUNTY (KFSM) – A Bentonville man accused of killing his grandmother filed a motion requesting a mental evaluation, and Judge Robin Green granted that request on Monday (Oct. 7), according to a Benton County prosecuting attorney.

Michael Conklin, 26, was arrested on July 26 and booked into the Benton County Jail on suspicion of stabbing his 76-year-old grandmother, Nelma Darline Conklin, to death.

He was charged with capital murder and aggravated robbery on Aug. 7 and pleaded not guilty to those charges on Aug. 11. He was living with her with at the time of her death.

Green granted Conklin’s request, putting all hearings on hold until he has time to be transferred to the Arkansas State Hospital for a full mental evaluation, officials said.

His next court date is scheduled for Jan. 5, according to officials.

There isn’t a specific timetable set for Conklin’s transfer to the hospital yet. It will be determined by when psychological personnel can schedule him in for the evaluation, officials said.
