CHESTER (KFSM) - A conductor and engineer have been hospitalized with injuries after a freight train derailed at 12:20 a.m. on Friday (Oct. 10) in Chester, according to Ron Sparks with Arkansas and Missouri Railroad.

The train with three locomotives (each weighting 217 tons) and 98 cars derailed after the tracks washed out due to heavy rains, Sparks said.

The train was not carrying hazardous materials at the time of the accident, Sparks said.

Other trains with the Arkansas and Missouri Railroad have been stopped due to the accident, according to Sparks.

The tracks through Chester will be closed until further notice.

Trains are expected to be running back to that area no later than Monday evening depending on weather, Sparks said.

After being examined at a nearby hospital for injuries, the conductor and engineer were released with minor bumps and bruises, according to Sparks.

The train was going from Springdale to Fort Smith, according to Crawford County Sheriff Ron Brown.
