DALLAS (KFSM) – The Red River Showdown resorted back to a name of the rivalries past as Oklahoma took down Texas 31-26 in a shootout.
Oklahoma’s offense struggled but got scores from their special teams (Alex Ross 91-yard kickoff return) and their defense (Zack Sanchez 43-yard interception return).
The Sooners led 31-13 after the Oklahoma offense got going in the second half but Texas put together back-to-back scoring drives to close the gap to 31-26 with just less than five minutes remaining. Texas had one last chance to win the game but was unable to mount a winning drive in the final minute.
Trevor Knight threw for 129 yards and a score on 12-of-20 passing while freshman running back Samaje Perine added 62 yards on the ground including a 13-yard touchdown run.
Longhorns’ quarterback Tyrone Swoopes threw for 334 yards and two touchdowns on 27-of-44 passing along with the interception that was returned for a score putting Texas down 17-3 early in the second quarter.
Texas became the first team this season to out gain their opponent by 200 yards in the first half and lose. Teams were 57-0 this season. The Sooners were out gained 482-232 for the game and only converted one third down attempt. That conversion came on OU’s final possession and allowed the Sooners to burn more clock and kept the Longhorns’ offense off the field.
