SPIRO, Okla. (KFSM) - A suspect is dead after being shot by a LeFlore County deputy Monday during a hostage situation in Spiro, according to the LeFlore County Sheriff's Office.

The suspect took four people hostage at a home on Shelley Carlisle Drive after stealing a purse from a nearby home, authorities said.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation identified the suspect as Freddie Cooper, 36, of Spiro.

"He was saying crazy stuff, the guy was out of his mind. He pointed the guns at me first and said I should just kill you," said Michael Chappell who was taken hostage.

At one point during the hostage situation, authorities said the suspect came out of the house and pointed a gun at deputies. A deputy fired one round at the suspect, hitting him in the chest and killing him, according to Seale. Seale said the suspect was carrying two loaded pistols.

"I watched the bullet go in and nothing come out," Chappell said. "It hit him and it twisted him around."

Deputies blocked off Shelley Carlisle Drive following the shooting.

Authorities are not releasing the name of the deputy.

OSBI agents said they are reviewing evidence from the scene. The district attorney will determine whether the shooting was justified, according to the OSBI.
