BENTON COUNTY (KFSM) – A total of five or six horses got loose on Interstate 49 on Thursday morning (Oct. 30) causing a car crash, according to Arkansas State Police.

At 7:59 a.m., troopers in Springdale got multiple calls concerning horses loose on Interstate 49 south of the North Walton Blvd exit (exit 93) in Bentonville, authorities said.

While troopers were on their way, they were informed that a two-car traffic crash had occurred, according to the Arkansas State Police.

Troopers arrived at the location at 8:11 a.m. and found one person trying to keep five or six horses out of the highway. The horses couldn’t be corralled, and they ran up a hill away from the highway out of traffic, police said.

Together with the Bella Vista Police Department and Bentonville Police Department, officers investigated a total of four crashes in the area, and in the end, only one was attributed to the horses’ presence on the highway, according to police.

Other crashes, which were attributed to traffic slowing or stopping (chain reaction), included a six-vehicle crash, from which, two people were sent to a local hospital, authorities said.

The other crashes only involved property damage, and no injuries were reported from them, according to police.

All crashes are under investigation from the Arkansas State Police.
