CBS SPORTS – There was a ton of star-power in Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, but it was Bayern under Martin Garcia who claimed the $5 million purse, going wire to wire to win at Santa Anita.

California Chrome, the winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, closed strong but couldn’t come out on top. Chrome finished third, with Toast of New York placing.

Both Bayern and Toast of New York jumped out to the front immediately, and surprisingly, none of the classic closers — including Chrome, Tonalist, and favorite Shared Belief — were able to make up enough ground.

There was a steward’s inquiry following the race, as it appeared Bayern may have made some contact with Shared Belief at the start, but not enough, apparently, to overturn the result. Owned by Jim Rome, Shared Belief jockey Mike Smith said after the race the early bump ruined his horse’s chances.

Nevertheless, legendary trainer Bob Baffert earned his first career Breeders’ Cup Classic victory.
