LEFLORE COUNTY (KFSM)- Oklahoma authorities have a new tool they hope will cut down on the state's high number of domestic homicides.
The new tool is a prepared list of "yes" or "no" questions authorities will use when confronting people who they suspect are experiencing domestic violence. Police said the list may appear like a small change, but it has already decreased the number of domestic violence incidents in Maryland, another state where the policy is in effect.
According to Deanna Chancellor, the executive director of The Women`s Crisis Services of LeFlore County, Oklahoma ranks third in homicides related to domestic violence.
The Poteau Police Department started using the list this summer, ahead of the statewide start date of Nov. 1.
“They help determine the level of danger that the particular victim will be experiencing,” Assistant Police Chief Greg Russell said.
One of the question on the list: "Does your significant other choke you?" If the answer is "yes," researchers said the partner is 10 times more likely to kill the victim.
Margaret Nicholson, assistant district attorney in LeFlore County, hopes the policy change will help put an end to abuse.
“It will bring the victim to the people who can provide counseling, housing and help to escape the violence,” Nicholson said.
Chancellor said early detection is key, and the list is a way to help victims understand their abuser will continue hurting them.
