FORT SMITH (KFSM) - Area leaders sat down Thursday (Nov.6) to talk about an aquatics park going up in Fort Smith. The water slides at the water park are going up and project leaders said it won't be long before the slides themselves are put in.

The four water slides are only one of the features the water park will offer. Also going in is a wave pool, a lazy river, and a chilren's area.

Voters approved the initial $10 million proposal back in 2012. Since then, area leaders said they've been hard at work getting everything done as promised.

At the meeting, they discussed the preparation ordinance. This allows them to contract out details like the pre-opening service, any marketing type services, and planning activities for the water park.

Sebastian County Judge David Hudson said the pre-planning and the outreach are important to have a successful facility. "We want to open into a pre-opening agreement and that is for the preliminary marketing type of activity development of a detailed operating budget," said Hudson.

According to Hudson, "This helps with other activities such as the name of the facility and things of that nature."

The meeting was at 6:30 p.m. at the Fort Smith Courthouse. Leaders said the aquatic park is set to open on Memorial Day of next year.
