FORT SMITH (KFSM)- Modern gun season opened Nov. 8 and hunters across the state are finding new and improved ways to pursue deer.

The Tackle Box in Fort Smith has some of the newest and hottest gadgets. The store's owner, Jerry Knittig, has been hunting for more than 50 years.

"With the computers, the callers, the attractants, with the feeders, I mean it's taking it to the next level,” Knittig said.

Some of his favorite new gadgets include the Fox Pro, which costs about $200 and makes noises that attract animals, and Big Game Butter, which costs $20.

"It's made out of peanut butter," Knittig said. "It's a really good attractant, which is a new system of hunting deer nowadays."

Deer are attracted to the butter's taste and smell.

There are also free smartphone apps and equipment that can turn a smartphone into a field camera. The equipment can cost anywhere from about $80 to $500.

Despite the apps and newest technology, Knittig believes every hunter should keep in mind the spirit of the sport.

"Hunting it's a privilege that God gave us,” Knittig said. "People don't understand what it's all about. I mean it's being able to go outside and enjoy the outdoors and enjoy what God gave us."
