GENTRY (KFSM) – A Gentry man was arrested after trying to steal antique vehicles on Nov. 7, police say.

Tyler M. Shaver, 18, was booked into the Benton County Detention Center at 2:13 a.m. on Nov. 8, according to the jail’s intake report. He faces charges of commercial burglary, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, first-degree criminal mischief and criminal trespass, the intake report states.

On Nov. 7, police arrived at Spirit Trucking at 175 S.E. 3rd St. in Gentry in response to a commercial burglary case. The Gentry Police Chief had already arrived at the building while on patrol and saw a man running inside the business wearing dark clothing, according to an arrest report.

Police surrounded Spirit Trucking and found a broken window on the north side of the building that the man had used to enter the business. One of the officers received notification that the person who called the burglary in to police was waiting to talk to authorities at a nearby restaurant, the report states.

That officer left to speak with the individual who called authorities about the burglary. When the officer met with the man, he was shown text messages the man had received from Shaver concerning the burglary.

The text messages detailing the burglary and documented in the arrest report are below.

  • Shaver: “So I’m [expletive] up bro, and me and a friend are tryin’ to steal some cars, and we almost got caught. I [expletive] ran across town and then back to a friend’s house. Dude, there are a ton of cops around tonight.”
  • Man: “Where you try and steal cars from?”
  • Shaver: “There’s a bunch of old classic Impalas and Chevy pickups in the trucking garages across from McDonalds. That’s where we was.”
  • Man: “Oh [expletive]. Why’d you try to steal them?”
  • Shaver: “Because we drunk as [expletive], and there’s some weed in Springdale. So, we all decided to try and get ’em to go to Springdale so we could get some smoke. That didn’t work, and we had to jump out the back window to get away.”

The officer took a copy of the text messages and returned to Spirit Trucking, where Shaver had been taken into custody, according to the report.

At first, Shaver told police he knew nothing of the burglary, but when police showed him the text messages, he said he was at Spirit Trucking, but “he had nothing to do with stealing anything,” the report states.

He said he was with three 17-year-old males and identified them, according to the report.

After interviewing two of the minors and Shaver, police determined the group broke into the business earlier in the night on Nov. 7 and took some beer, the report states. They all went back later that evening for a second time and entered Spirit Trucking again, according to the report.

Three different antique vehicles were damaged during the burglary, as well as, the overhead door of the business, the report states. Damages were estimated to be $50,000, according to the report.

Shaver was taken to the Benton County Detention Center, and his bond was set at $40,000, according to the jail’s intake report. His next court date is scheduled for Dec. 15, the intake report states.

It is unknown if the three juveniles were also arrested.
