FORT SMITH (KFSM)- You'll want to make sure your car is ready for the harsh winter conditions by making sure you have what you need packed away before even leaving the house.

With cold temperatures here and chances snow already arriving in the forecast, it's time to start preparing your car for winter weather. So here are some helpful tips on how you can prepare.

The first thing first is to pack your car with an emergency kit. In the kit, be sure to have a flashlight, extra batteries, blankets, water, and snacks. Also, keep a windshield scraper for the snow and ice.  You might want to have extra hats, socks, and mittens just in case you get stranded out in the cold weather.

Next check the mechanics on your car, such as antifreeze levels to ensure that they avoid freezing. Also, check the wear of your brakes. Lastly, make sure you have enough tread on your tires. Vehicles must be equipped with chains or snow tires.

To check the tread depth of your tires, there's an easy trick you can do at home to make sure your tires meet the standards.

All it takes is a penny from your coin jar. Make sure Lincoln's head is facing you when you hold the penny in your hand. Next, put Lincoln on his head and put the penny into the tread of the tire. You will want to make sure that Lincoln's forehead disappears into the tread. The more of Lincoln's head you don't see means that your car is going to perform better in winter weather. If it doesn't you might want to get new tires for your vehicle before the winter weather arrives.

If you need any help getting your car ready, head over to your local car repair shop so they can do an inspection before the winter weather hits.
