FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) - After months of planning and hard work, half a million Christmas lights will be turned on Friday (Nov.21) to signal the start of the holiday season in Fayetteville.

"These are lights above you, beside you, below you," said Director Maryilyn Heifner. Many twinkling Christmas lights being strung up on trees, on businesses, even on the courthouse. "It's just magical," said Heifner.

It's been a project 21 years in the making. "We knew absolutely nothing at first, " according to Heifner. "We were using fishing poles to cast lights over the trees."

After months of testing the bulbs and getting each hung back up in it's spot, the Lights of the Ozarks will finally be turned on. Families said the display is priceless. "They're pretty blown away, it's hard to explain to them how many they are and for them to wrap their minds around that," said visitor Aaron Dotson.

"It's a unique experience," said Heifner. It's something of a miracle and a winter wonderland that thousands of people from all over the United States will come out to see. "Probably about 300,000 people over that six week period that come through," said Heifner.

The lights will be lit up throughout the holiday season.
