FORT SMITH (KFSM) -- A car show in Fort Smith raised hundreds of dollars for the Salvation Army just in time for the holidays.
For those who participated in the car show at Breeden Auto Group, there was no entry fee. Everyone donated to the Salvation Army for the Angel Tree program, which provides clothing and gifts to children in need.
Jason Walker entered his 2010 Ford pick-up truck and donated $20.
"It's all for a good cause. Help out Angel Tree. Help out the little kids,” Walker said.
Salvation Army Commanding Officer Russell Clay said the angel tree at Central Mall in Fort Smith serves Sequoyah, Sebastian, Crawford and Scott counties.
"We have 1600 kids this year to help,” Clay said.
Each child's first name and age is labeled on the tree at Central Mall, along with their pants, shirt, shoe and coat sizes, and a Christmas gift wish.
"We're very appreciative to the community and how they help each other, and to help us to help those in need,” Clay said.
Donations from the car show brought in $438 Saturday, and the money went straight to the Salvation Army.
"They help a lot of people around the holidays with meals and kids that normally wouldn't have a Christmas,” Walker said. “It's just a good thing to do."
Last year the event raised more than $1,000, and Sean Thomas at the dealership said he plans to do the event every year. This is the third annual event.
The Salvation Army asks that people buying gifts for the children do not wrap them. They should be taken to the Salvation Army Christmas Joy Center at 900 Garrison Ave between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, by Dec. 12.
