ARKANSAS (KFSM)- The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) is expecting the highest traffic volume for Thanksgiving travel on its highway systems. It released a feature on IDriveArkansas.com highlighting interstate corridors and secondary routes that drivers may consider when travel is delayed.

An estimated 46-million drivers will hit the road this Thanksgiving, which is the highest number since 2007, according to AAA. About 90 percent will travel by car.

Gas prices are cheaper with drivers paying less than $3 on average in most states. The low prices are impacting the increase of travel, AAA states.

Kevin Hall, of Fayetteville, said gas prices are about .50 cents cheaper than what he's used to seeing.

"I would think a lot of people would want to get on the road now, get out and actually go visit people that they may have put off later," Hall said.

Nathaniel Jarvis is a UA grad student. He's heading home to Houston, Texas to see his family.

"It has made it more painful to travel  when they (gas prices) were really high but now that its dropped, I'm probably more willing to drive somewhere," Jarvis said.
